Kissing the Bricks at the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon

More than 20,000 people ran the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis last Saturday. The highlight for many runners is taking a 2.5-mile lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and stopping to kiss the bricks.

I biked the entire course so I could catch the starting line action, the mid-race lap around the track, and the excitement/relief at the finish line.

I’ve been on the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a number of times, and biking a lap and photographing runners kissing the bricks was one of the best experiences! It was second only to being on the actual starting grid during Indy 500 race day.

There was a bit of rain before the races began, but the weather for the Mini was slightly overcast with temps in the mid-50s, which is perfect for keeping runners (and photographers) cool.
The sun popped out a few times, which gave me a chance to get some warm light and blue skies with big clouds.

It was great working with the 500 Festival. It’s a fantastic event to kick off the month of May in Indianapolis!
