Telling the Story of the Dance Experience With Photography

Dance Photography

I started doing dance photography a few times a year when two of my kids started dancing. Because my love of photography is centered around storytelling, I’m looking to document the experience of dancing.

I look for moments of peak action in their movements. I stand backstage with the dancers peering between the curtains. I show interactions and get a feel for the environments. Above all, I’m looking to convey the feeling of joy & excitement of the people participating.

And that goes for anything I’m photographing. Anywhere I go, at any time, people are doing things and having feelings.

We’re often drawn to big action & emotions, but small & subtle moments are often even more difficult to capture, and they connect with audiences just as effectively.

I’m focused on telling the daily stories of my life and the people in it. And even more important to me than the who what where when why how is the FEELING

I’m not an expert in dance, but to me these photos capture what the dancers feel before, during, and after the performance, along with what it feels like to be in the audience experiencing it firsthand.
